Established in 2001, the Sydney Spectres are a gay and lesbian basketball club catering for everyone from beginners to advanced players in a welcoming team environment.

The Sydney Spectres started with just one team, but the club has grown rapidly since the 2002 Sydney Gay Games and now boasts three male and three female teams.

Matches take place year round and local competitions are held by the City of Sydney Basketball Association.

Spectres president Andrew Bondini said anyone was welcome to come along to a training session and check out the club.

"We have just started a new season and we are open to new players. Absolutely everyone is welcome," he said.

The Sydney Spectres are also involved in countless social activities including fun runs, Fair Day and the recent Team Sydney Sports Day Out, which drew hundreds of people and helped promote a major increase in the number of people involved in gay and lesbian sporting clubs around Sydney.

"It is important in that it contributes to the community," Bondini said. So if you are up for a bit of competition, want to stay healthy and are interested in meeting new people, then The Sydney Spectres Basketball Team may be just the thing you are looking for.
